FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswickers are encouraged to celebrate Heritage Week 2016, Feb. 8-15.

Starting today, more than 100 community and school events have been organized throughout the province.

The theme for the week is Leadership & Legacy. This topic touches upon many aspects of New Brunswick’s past, including the accomplishments of women, as well as those who have forged a place in our provincial memory.

“Heritage Week allows us to create an awareness of our history and promote our cultural heritage,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser. “New Brunswickers young and old have a chance to learn about some of the men and women who shaped our beautiful province and helped to make it the best place to raise a family.”

Fraser and Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Stephen Horsman will officially launch the week on Feb. 9 at the Nashwaaksis Middle School in Fredericton.

Many other community-based activities are also planned and are open to all ages.

“As we move closer to Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, it is increasingly important that we celebrate the people who have helped get us here,” said Fraser. “Heritage Week 2016 will go a long way toward helping to identify New Brunswick’s greatest contributors to our country.”
