FREDERICTON (GNB) – Athletes, coaches and support staff along with family and friends celebrated the arrival of the Centennial Cup at the New Brunswick Sport Hall of Fame today. A brief recognition of Team NB’s medalists from the Games also took place.
Team New Brunswick won the Centennial Cup earlier this year at the conclusion of the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C. It is awarded to the province or territory showing the greatest improvement in athletic performance from one Summer Games to the next or from one Winter Games to the next. It is the first time that New Brunswick has won the award since its inception in 1971.
To celebrate the arrival of the Centennial Cup, it will remain on display for the summer as part of the Glorious Victory: Trophies of the NB Sports Hall of Fame exhibit.
The Centennial Cup was designed by Robert S. Kent of Kingston and is modeled after the Katimavik Pavilion at Expo 67. It was crafted, in part, from 37 precious metals and wood laminations representing 10 provinces and two territories. It was donated to the Canada Games by the City of Kingston, Ont., in 1970.
The Canada Games alternate every two years between summer and winter games and are one of the largest multi-sport events held in Canada with about 3,000 athletes participating in 19 sports. Team NB won 13 medals in Prince George: three gold, four silver and six bronze.
The next Canada Games, the 50th, will be held in July 2017 in Winnipeg, Man. New Brunswick has hosted the Games twice, with the next opportunity scheduled in 2029.
