SHERBROOKE, Que. (GNB) – Team NB won four medals Thursday at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que.

Sailor Fraser Wells of Rothesay and wrestler Elizabeth "Bea" Fagan of Oromocto struck gold in their respective events, while Bailey Theriault of Rexton and Shalina Mason of St. Stephen wrestled their ways to bronze medals.

“It was a really tough competition,” said Wells. “Although I have sailed against these guys before, it was a high level competition. The wind was a lot more consistent these past few days.”

Wells entered the final day of competition in sailing one point behind the leader from British Columbia.

Fagan was all smiles Thursday evening after quickly pinning her Quebec opponent in the final round of the gold-medal bout.

“This is pretty awesome,” said Fagan. “I worked my butt off to make the (Canada Games) team, and this is the best feeling in the world.”

New Brunswick enters the final day of competition for week one of the Canada Games with chances to snag two more medals. The men’s baseball team meets Team Alberta in an early-afternoon bronze medal game. Team New Brunswick lost 7-0 to British Columbia in a late semi-final game in nearby Coaticook, Que.

In basketball, Team NB squares off against Quebec in the bronze medal match. Ontario defeated New Brunswick 75-64 in Thursday’s semi-final game.

Women’s softball returns to the field in the consolation final against Saskatchewan for fifth place. The team earned the right to Friday’s game after beating Alberta 7-0 Thursday.

After a week in the pool, swimmers head to the open water competition in Lake Memphremagog Friday morning. Mary Ketterling of Fredericton, Kelsea Vessey of Fredericton, Gabriel Boivin of Dieppe and David Thibodeau of Fredericton will take part in the 5,000-metre swim.
