FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Social Development Minister Bruce Fitch in observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day:

The safety of our most vulnerable and frail seniors is the top priority for our government and should also be a priority for New Brunswickers.

Our seniors built this province and continue to enrich our lives with their knowledge, experience and culture. Seniors should always be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

There are many forms of elder abuse; violence at the hands of loved ones or care givers, emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, theft, fraud, telephone and investment scams. Abuses can happen in any circumstances; at home, in the community or in a residential facility.

Our government fully supports World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011. It represents an important time to reflect upon the abuses and suffering inflicted upon our older citizens.

Any form of abuse against our seniors is wrong and must be stopped. New Brunswickers should never hesitate to report elder abuse. Adult Protection referrals can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling Social Development at 1-833-733-7835. Help is also available by contacting the police or Crime Stoppers.

The Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick, the Financial and Consumer Services Commission and our Social Supports website have information about elder abuse.
