FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was released today by Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman in recognition of National Foster Family Week, Oct. 16-22:

As we acknowledge National Foster Family Week, I thank those who have opened their hearts and their homes to children and youth in foster care.

This week of recognition for foster families provides us with the opportunity to celebrate those who have chosen to have a child or youth become a part of their family. I am told that fostering is one of the most rewarding journeys a person can experience in life, and I know that the contribution you have made to the lives of those who have joined your family is immeasurable.

Foster families serve as caregivers and role models, and show love, compassion and support to children and youth in need of a home, a helping hand, and a family. The environment they provide helps children to grow, develop, achieve their hopes and dreams, and reach their full potential.

At any given time in our province, there are about 800 children in foster care. It is always the department’s goal to reunite children and youth with their families, but, until that reunion can take place, we need caring individuals and families to provide temporary homes to those in need.

If you are considering being a foster parent, or would like more information about fostering, I encourage you to contact the Department of Social Development or call 1-800-990-0119.

To all the foster families in our province, I offer my thanks and gratitude for all you do to help children and youth.
