FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has sent letters of offer to the successful bidders under a request for proposals that will create up to 375 specialized care beds across New Brunswick.

This is the second request for offers that is part of an ongoing process which will ultimately result in the creation of 704 specialized care beds by 2016.

These specialized care beds, included in the 2011-16 Nursing Home Renovation and Replacement Plan, will provide enhanced services to seniors who suffer from Alzheimer's disease or dementia and who require a high level of care. These clients may require assistance with daily activities but do not require ongoing nursing care or supervision.

“The demographic review that was conducted as part of our nursing home renovation and replacement plan showed an increasing need for these types of beds and services,” said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. “I am pleased with the response from operators who want to work with our government on providing the proper care to seniors who suffer from Alzheimer's disease or dementia.”

Proposals from qualified bidders were evaluated by a committee based on criteria in the request for proposals, which included demographics and identified need.

All successful proponents must meet the requirements of any acts, regulations and standards pertaining to the operating of a specialized care bed home.

The next steps will be to finalize the details with the successful proponents as the operators will be proceeding with the conversion or construction of additions to facilities or new facilities.

For those facilities that are converting beds, the conversion can begin immediately once beds become available for new clients. For those operators that need to build an addition or a new facility, construction must begin within nine months of receipt of the letter of approval from the department.

“The creation of these beds will help ensure that our government meets the growing needs of our seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia,” said Dubé. “More importantly, these facilities will enhance the quality of life of seniors by providing the right level of care in the most appropriate setting.”
