FREDERICTON (GNB) – A housing development that includes six affordable housing units for low-income individuals, families, seniors and people with disabilities is being built at 367 Main St. in Fredericton.

"Adequate, accessible and affordable housing is a significant factor in helping to enhance the quality of life of New Brunswickers and their families," said Social Development Minister Madeleine Dubé. "Projects such as this one are good examples of how governments and the community can work together to rebuild New Brunswick."

The overall 18-unit development was established by Cedar Valley Investments Ltd. and is being built at a cost of about $1.7 million. The project is receiving more than $526,000 in rent supplements from the provincial government for six units and $240,000 in federal funding to offset construction costs.

"Our government is committed to working with the Province of New Brunswick to develop and implement local solutions to housing," said Fisheries and Oceans Minister Keith Ashfield. "This investment will continue to help residents of Fredericton access safe and affordable housing that meets their needs."

Ashfield appeared on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of human resources and skills development and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding for this project comes as a result of the $47-million Investment in Affordable Housing 2011-14 Agreement between the New Brunswick government and the federal government. Under the agreement, the New Brunswick government will use the funds for new construction projects and rental subsidies.

This affordable housing unit was built to high energy-efficiency standards and involved consultation with Efficiency NB. Builders of multi-unit residential buildings can receive technical support from Efficiency NB on how to meet energy efficiency targets.
