MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government is committing $1 million towards the construction of a residential hospice facility in Moncton.

“Our investment will ensure residents in southeastern New Brunswick who can no longer stay home through the end of their life have access to a facility providing essential services to palliative care,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Sherry Wilson at the official launch of Hospice Southeast New Brunswick’s capital campaign.

Wilson made the announcement on behalf of Justice Minister Andrea Anderson-Mason, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

“Hospice Southeast New Brunswick is very grateful for the tremendous support from the Province of New Brunswick,” said Dennis Cochrane, president of the charitable organization. “We have worked closely with the provincial government on this new model of end-of-life care and are eager to apply our 15 years of expertise and experience in hospice services to a residential setting. With this contribution, the province is setting the tone for our capital campaign and leading the way for all other donors to support this very important, very significant project.”

The funding commitment is conditional on the federal government providing matching funds towards the facility.

In August 2018, the Department of Health announced an investment $1,082,264 over two years toward establishing a clinical care team, including the hiring of an on-site licensed practical nurse and personal support workers who will be supported by the Extra-Mural Program interdisciplinary team.

Established as a registered charity in 2004, Hospice Southeast New Brunswick promotes awareness about life-limiting illnesses and end-of-life issues, and provides grief and bereavement services and support for clients and families. Construction on the $5-million residential facility is set to begin in early 2020 with an anticipated opening in fall of 2020.
