MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing a combined $657,000 in the expansion of the Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club.

“Improving the quality of life for all New Brunswickers is important for your government, and we are proud to invest in projects that address that priority,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “We are proud to make this investment, which will help improve the Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club’s facilities and give more opportunity for recreational skiers and other users to enjoy these improved facilities.”

The project involves constructing a new building for the club, incorporating a biathlon range into the trails, and improving existing trails, making them easier to groom. The goal is to enable more residents and tourists to benefit from the club, promoting healthy lifestyles and community engagement while also creating economic prosperity for the region.

“Recreational infrastructure like the Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club allows residents to stay active and strengthens their sense of community,” said Miramichi-Grand Lake MP Pat Finnigan. “The Government of Canada is making smart investments in public infrastructure that improve the quality of people’s lives and promote economic prosperity by creating well-paying jobs for the middle class.”

Finnigan attended for federal Infrastructure and Communities Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

The provincial government is investing $297,000 in the project while the federal government is contributing $360,000.

“We want to thank both the provincial and federal governments for their financial support of this project and their recognition of the importance this project will bring to the residents of Miramichi and surrounding area,” said club president Norm Brown. “This project, when complete, will turn this facility into a centre of excellence for outdoor recreation within Northumberland County and beyond. We also want to thank the City of Miramichi for its ongoing support and services offered.”
