TRACADIE (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $150,000 towards the development of a new downtown park in Tracadie in commemoration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

“As one of the founding provinces that formed Confederation, New Brunswick has a deep history that had an important affect upon how Canada is shaped today,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle. “Our investment in this project will be an attractive addition to the downtown while serving as a reminder of Tracadie’s history, all while marking our nation’s 150th anniversary.”

Rousselle spoke on behalf of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The new park will include a fountain. The intent is to make the downtown area more dynamic and to pay tribute to the founders of Tracadie.

“This urban park, with a unique style, is part of our revitalization effort,” said Tracadie Mayor Denis Losier. “In addition to the landscaping improvements, the founders park of the 150th anniversary of Confederation will pay homage to the pioneers of various ethnic backgrounds who built our region.”

Funding is being provided under the Program for Municipal Development to Commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Municipalities with populations of more than 4,000 and less than 25,000 were eligible to apply for funding of up to $150,000 for beautification projects to contribute to a vibrant and attractive downtown and to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary.
