MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are supporting the City of Moncton’s storm sewer renewal and improvement program.

“Our government’s investment will help reduce the risk of flooding for residents in flood-prone areas while creating jobs to stimulate the local economy,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “We are proud to be one of three levels of government working to carry out this important infrastructure project in Moncton.”

“The federal government’s support for public infrastructure has never been stronger,” said Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Robert Goguen. “We are pleased to work with the New Brunswick Government to approve projects under the New Building Canada Fund, to ensure that infrastructure funding continues to flow in New Brunswick as we focus on creating jobs, promoting growth, and building strong, prosperous communities across Canada. We are proud to invest in the Storm Sewer Renewal and Improvement Program, which will focus on reducing the risk of flooding in flood-prone areas in the Moncton area.”

Goguen attended the announcement for federal Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs Denis Lebel.

Under the project a dedicated storm-sewer relief system will be installed where sanitary and storm sewers are currently combined; deteriorating sewers will be replaced; sewer capacity will be increased in certain sections; and a major drain relief system will be installed to reduce the risk of flooding. Once complete, the project will significantly improve the reliability of the city’s sewer system.

“The City of Moncton is pleased to see the three levels of government partner in this important infrastructure project,” said Moncton deputy mayor Shawn Crossman. “As our city continues to grow, we must ensure that our sewer system is fully capable of supporting new development while alleviating the risk of flooding in certain areas of our municipality. This project will provide environmental benefits and will strengthen our community as we look toward the future.”

The provincial government will contribute up to a third of eligible costs, to a maximum of $8 million, and the City of Moncton will be responsible for all remaining costs of the project, estimated to total $31.2 million.

The federal government has selected this project for funding consideration of up to a third of eligible costs, to a maximum of $8 million, under the New Building Canada Fund’s Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component-National and Regional Projects. This funding is conditional on the project meeting applicable federal eligibility requirements with respect to the New Building Canada Fund and the signing of a contribution agreement.
