QUISPAMSIS (CNB) – A skateboard and bike park will be developed in Quispamsis thanks to funding announced today by Finance Minister Blaine Higgs and town mayor Murray Driscoll.

A $100,000 investment from the municipality and a $50,000 investment from the provincial government will allow design work to proceed immediately on Phase 1 of the project with construction to begin in the fall.

"Our government is proud to invest in an important recreational project for our young people," said Higgs. "Investing in such a project will help them lead a more active lifestyle."

Higgs spoke on behalf of Economic Development Minister Paul Robichaud.

The proposed location is on Landing Court, near the Arts and Culture Park. The land has a natural slope that will be built into the landscape of the park. This central location reflects the consensus developed through public consultation and the creation of the town's Active Transportation Plan.

Town residents Robin Parks and Jamie Buchan asked the town council to consider developing a skateboard park last year and Avery Theriault presented a supporting petition with 671 signatures.

"This is a community project that has been driven by our residents," said Driscoll. "As a council, we understand the need for these types of activities in Quispamsis. We have heard the message loudly and clearly."

Another public consultation session, led by Jim Scott of CollabPlan, will be held Tuesday, June 28, at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall to offer local residents a chance to further discuss concepts, designs and features they would like to see in the park.

"We want input," added Driscoll. "We encourage the people who will use the park to take ownership of it."
