SHEDIAC (CNB) – Residents and businesses of the Shediac area will soon have access to a multipurpose facility as the result of investments by the federal and provincial governments and the Town of Shediac.

The funding was announced today by Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation; National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield, who is also minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and minister for the Atlantic Gateway; and Shediac Mayor Raymond Cormier.

“The provincial government is proud to be an important partner in this community project for Shediac and region,” said Boudreau. “Our investment in this multifunctional centre will provide services for our yong people and all community groups, improve the quality of their lives, and help us on our journey toward self-sufficiency.”

The centre will be built on the grounds next to the festival arena, and will be available for use by the town and surrounding communities for business meetings, cultural and tourism events and other community activities.

“Our government’s investment, through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund, will help the Town of Shediac build a new multi-purpose facility that will generate additional local economic activity and sustain and create jobs,” said Ashfield. “This project will ensure residents continue to have access to valuable community infrastructure.”

The total investment is $3.5 million. Of this, the federal government is contributing $1.6 million through ACOA under the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF). The provincial government is contributing $400,000, and the Town of Shediac, $1.5 million.

“This is a great day for the residents of Shediac and its neighbouring communities,” said Cormier. “On behalf of council members, I want to thank the citizens that agreed to participate in the development of this project and all the political and community stakeholders who recognized the importance of this project for the future of our communities. The entire population, both young and old, thanks you.”
