HAMPTON (GNB) – Provincial and federal enforcement officers recently performed checks on about 40 hunters in the Hampton Marsh area and issued one ticket, one warning and one charge.

The patrol was in response to reports of shots fired at night in the area before the start of waterfowl season on Oct. 1.

It is illegal and a dangerous practice to discharge a firearm when it is too dark to properly identify a target. It is illegal to have a firearm out of the case outside of the designated hunting times listed in the 2019 Hunt & Trap guide.

Conservation officers with the Department of Public Safety partnered with Environment and Climate Change Canada to conduct the checks.

One ticket was issued under the Migratory Birds Convention Act (Canada) for possession of an unplugged shotgun and one warning was issued under the New Brunswick Fish and Wildlife Act for failure to produce a licence. One guide will answer to a charge under the Fish and Wildlife Act for having a firearm unwrapped at night.
