OROMOCTO (GNB) – Construction will begin shortly on a new school that will replace École Arc-en-ciel.

“Our government understands that education is of paramount importance for New Brunswickers, and that is why we continue to make strategic investments to ensure our school infrastructure meets the needs of students,” said Premier Brian Gallant.

The total cost of the project is $22.2 million. More than $14.2 million is invested as part of the 2018-19 capital budget.

“Building this new school will ensure our students have the best learning environment possible and will stimulate the economy and create jobs,” said deputy premier Stephen Horsman.

Horsman spoke on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny.

The new school will accommodate 450 francophone students in the Oromocto region, from kindergarten to Grade 8, and is expected to open in January 2020.

In addition to classrooms, the school will feature music and art rooms, science labs, a performing arts room, a gym, a cafeteria, a stage, multi-purpose rooms, a library and spaces for staff and administration.

“To achieve its mission, the school district must offer students adequate infrastructure and the proper learning environment,” said Willy Wilondja, representative of the Francophone sud school district education council. “The education council is therefore happy with the project to build a new École Arc-en-ciel. We also thank the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, who listened to our district’s growing needs.”

The current school was built in 1957 and has 300 students.

The 2018-19 capital budget includes investments of $105.8 million in schools.

The government’s 10-year education plans aim to improve educational outcomes and better prepare young people for the future. They set objectives in priority areas to create lifelong learners, support educational leaders and bring stability to the system.
