MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $450,000 in the construction of a new facility for the Greater Moncton SPCA.
“Animals are an important part of family life for many New Brunswickers,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “The Greater Moncton SPCA plays an important role in ensuring these animals are well taken care of while they wait to meet their new family and forever home. This investment will help them build a new, larger facility and enable them to continue their important work.”
Development of the $5.8 million dollar infrastructure is set to start in the spring of 2019. The new structure will double the size of the current 38-year-old facility.
“This investment from the provincial government puts us one step closer to our new building,” said Dave Rogers, executive director of the Greater Moncton SPCA. “It will be state-of-the-art in animal care.”
The Greater Moncton SPCA, which operates the largest animal shelter east of Montreal, opened the doors at their current location in 1980. The group is tasked with providing a service under the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and is the only facility of its kind in the area. It provides care for sick, injured, homeless, lost and unwanted animals, and works to prevent cruelty to animals through sheltering, placement and community education.
