FREDERICTON (GNB) – In recognition of National Family Literacy Day, Jan. 27, the provincial government is encouraging families to take time to participate in reading activities with their children.

“I encourage all families to support National Family Literacy Day by dedicating some time to reading with children today and every day,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Serge Rousselle. “Reading is fundamental to a child’s future success, and is also something that is fun and rewarding.”

Rousselle said the department is determined to improve literacy skills at all grade levels.

“Our government is focused upon improving students’ performance in literacy,” said Rousselle. “We are committed to the development of a 10-year education plan to bring stability to the school system, and to implementing an aggressive literacy strategy.”

With the 10-year plan, the government aims to develop better reading and writing skills among children of all ages, so that they are able to participate fully in school, at work, at home and in their communities. New Brunswickers with strong literacy skills will be better equipped to deal with the challenges and opportunities that they will encounter.

The department also supports initiatives such as the book tent program and ELF (Elementary-Literacy Friends) and Born to Read, which encourage children to understand the importance and value in reading, while at the same time experiencing the joy it brings.

“Literacy is the foundation upon which a skilled workforce is established,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “A child’s future is brighter with these two basic skills – reading and writing - and that is why it is crucial we devote some time every day to participate in reading activities with our children.”

Both Rousselle and Landry encourage all families and communities to visit their local libraries and take part in activities that are planned for the day.

National Family Literacy Day was launched by ABC Life Literacy Canada 18 years ago. It is observed annually on Jan. 27 to recognize the importance of literacy and engagement in reading and writing activities as a family or community.
