FREDERICTON (GNB) – Stakeholders and individuals are encouraged to participate in Phase II of the review of legislation governing workers’ compensation by submitting their ideas and feedback online.
The three-phase review, which began in 2013, is being conducted by the provincial government and WorkSafeNB. It is the first significant review of the legislation in more than 20 years.
“As minister responsible for WorkSafeNB, I fully support this review process,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “The aim is to ensure that the balance between the rights of injured workers and the financial interests of employers complies with our 21st-century workplaces.”
WorkSafeNB administers a no-fault workplace accident and disability insurance program for employers and their workers. The program is funded solely through employer assessments.
Phase I of the review process saw the introduction of new legislation on April 2, 2015 that made the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Tribunal separate from WorkSafeNB.
Phase II of the review will examine the governance structure for WorkSafeNB, the Workers’ and Employers’ Advocates Services, and Section 38 of the Workers’ Compensation Act which governs benefits.
Stakeholders and individuals are encouraged to participate by visiting the Citizen Engagement and Consultation website to submit their ideas and feedback. Feedback can be submitted until Sept. 25.
WorkSafeNB is a Crown corporation charged with overseeing the implementation and application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workers' Compensation Act, the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission Act and the Firefighters' Compensation Act.
