FREDERICTON (GNB) – Lucas Woolley, a student at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, has been recognized as one of four finalists by the Design Next International Student Competition.

Woolley will be going to New York City from May 15 to 20 to compete to be a grand winner. Grand winners will have their names and designs published on the Surtex website and will be featured in Surtex magazine, which is distributed worldwide.

In his work, Woolley focuses on designing digital pattern-making and screen printing.

“Mr. Woolley competed against students from major art and design institutions from around the world and is the only North American finalist,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Francine Landry. “We are proud to see such an innovative artist in New Brunswick and we wish him much future success in the world of textiles and surface design.”

While in New York, Woolley will have the opportunity to present his designs to top international licensing agents, design houses, and art buyers. He will also attend workshops on how to license his work and build contacts within the industry.

“Within the world of textiles and surface design, being recognized by Surtex is akin to being in academia and earning a Rhodes Scholarship,” said Jan Brooks, textile studio co-ordinating instructor at the college.

Upon graduation, Woolley plans on returning to the college in Fredericton for a year of graduate studies before pursuing a career in art licensing and designing for home décor and fashion.
