FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has invested $30,000 to assist middle and high school trades programs in New Brunswick.

The government has provided funding assistance in sponsorship of the Construction Association of New Brunswick’s Building for the Future Fund. The program provides tools, equipment and materials for skilled trades’ courses.

“Our government is pleased to support projects aimed at exposing New Brunswick’s middle and high school students to the skilled trades while providing them with an opportunity to explore future employment through apprenticeship programs,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. “Our government is focused on connecting people with skills to jobs. That connection must begin at the earliest possible stage.”

The association began the program in 2008 in the Moncton Northwest region. It has been expanded to include Saint John and Fredericton and provides supplies to 27 of the 74 identified schools in the province from both anglophone and francophone districts.

“Our members have been a driving force in bringing this project to fruition,” said Construction Association of New Brunswick president John McDonald. “With help from government we are able to collaborate with more schools, businesses and communities to provide the environment necessary to effectively introduce the trades to young prospective apprentices.”

“This initiative complements other programs our government is supporting such as the New Brunswick Teen Apprentice Program and the four new apprenticeship incentive programs,” said Carr.
