FREDERICTON (GNB) – People, Skills, Jobs: Putting our resources to work is the theme of the provincial jobs summit which will be held in Fredericton on May 12 and 13 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel.

The summit will bring together stakeholders from across the province representing a wide range of sectors, including universities, public and private colleges, industry, business, youth, under-represented groups, First Nations and labour organizations. It will focus on three areas - people, skills and jobs - all of which are vital to growing the economy and creating prosperity.

“The jobs summit will be more than an opportunity to continue discussions - it will be about action,” said Premier David Alward. “Our government has been working with the private sector and workers to grow our economy and help connect more New Brunswickers with jobs here at home. It is time to act on the next step of our plan for economic growth in every region.”

“This summit will help build on the investments that have been made in our workforce, natural resource sectors, knowledge industries, and in New Brunswick exports to connect our most important resource, our people, with jobs in their communities,” he said.

The summit results from the provincial government’s commitment to working collaboratively to implement the Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy 2013-2016; the innovation agenda, the New Brunswick Energy Blueprint and six-sector strategy, Growing Together - Economic Development Action Plan 2012-2016; and  the recommendations in An Employment Action Plan for Persons with a Disability in New Brunswick 2012-2017.

In addition to the jobs summit, the provincial government is supporting job and career fairs in Moncton, Fredericton and Campbellton. The Moncton event, the Southeast NB Employment and Education Forum, took place March 20 at the Moncton Coliseum. The Fredericton job and career fair will be held on May 14 at the Delta Fredericton. There will be two events held in northern New Brunswick; a labour market forum on May 7 in Bathurst and a job fair specifically for persons with disabilities on June 4 at the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick  campus in Campbellton.

“Creating jobs, growing the economy and effectively providing support and career planning for New Brunswickers is our government's priority,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr. “Under the Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy, we are focused on people, skills and jobs. By bringing together students, job seekers and employers, these job fairs are addressing the needs of our provincial workforce and helping to put our greatest resource to work.”
