FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Jody Carr in relation to the labour dispute that began at the University of New Brunswick on Jan. 13:

Earlier this week, the provincial government appointed Brian Keller, a special outside mediator, to meet with the Association of University of New Brunswick Teachers and the University of New Brunswick on Jan. 29 and 30.

As minister responsible for labour, I am pleased that the process enabled the parties to reach a tentative collective agreement. It still needs to be ratified by the union membership and the university’s board of governors.

The strike and lockout have been immediately suspended. Classes will resume as soon as possible, hopefully, by Monday, Feb. 3.

Our concern has always been the students and their ability to finish their term. I look forward to seeing them back in the classroom.

Our province's success depends on a strong, responsive and educated workforce. Our government recognizes that our post-secondary education sector is an essential building block to growing New Brunswick's economy, creating jobs and responding to the evolving needs of our labour market.
