FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Danny Soucy, in recognition of Labour Day, Sept. 2:

Labour Day has been officially celebrated in Canada since 1894, but its origins date back to 1872, when workers first demanded a shorter work week. More than 140 years later, these efforts are still honoured through our commitment to strong employment standards.

Today, Labour Day is an opportunity pay tribute to the contribution of workers to our communities and economy. Also, as the original workers sought, it provides some extra time for workers to take a well-deserved break.

We are proud of our workforce and we know a strong labour market is a key component to rebuilding New Brunswick. That is why our government has outlined our support through our recently released, three-year, New Brunswick's Labour Force and Skills Development Strategy. Every effort must be made to ensure that all New Brunswickers are provided the opportunity to be included in the workforce and reach their full potential.

New Brunswickers are innovative and hard-working people. This holiday provides a perfect opportunity to salute and thank the many dedicated people who are making a difference in our communities on a daily basis.

Labour Day is also an occasion for us to remember the importance and dignity of work, and to restate our commitment to health and safety in the workplace. It provides the opportunity to reflect on our individual work-life balance.

As we reflect on the origins of this holiday, I hope New Brunswickers relax and take the extra time to enjoy being with friends and family in our beautiful province.

As minister responsible for labour, I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable Labour Day weekend.
