FREDERICTON (GNB) – Melissa Montgomery, a graduating student at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, has won an international textile design competition.

Montgomery, a student in the fibre arts program at the college, earned the title in the Virginia Jackson Design Competition for her outstanding textile design in the dobby category.

"We congratulate Ms. Montgomery on this outstanding achievement," said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Danny Soucy. "Our government is proud of the talented students at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design who are graduating with the necessary skills for success in their respective industries. We are equally proud of the college and instructors who show their commitment to the arts through their teaching excellence."

As part of her prize, Montgomery will be flown to North Carolina for the award ceremony in June. She will also be invited to participate in an industry networking event where she will have the opportunity to share her portfolio.

That event, called Showtime, is the most extensive presentation of fabric, leather and trimmings in the Western Hemisphere and welcomes buyers from more than 800 companies in such markets as apparel, furniture manufacturers, and interior design.

Students were judged in three categories: jacquard, dobby and print This year’s competition included 48 students from nine colleges and universities: the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design; High Point University; Michigan State University; North Carolina State University; Philadelphia University; Rhode Island School of Design; Savannah College of Art and Design; Syracuse University; and The University of Georgia. The New Brunswick College of Craft and Design was the only Canadian college that participated.
