FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued today by Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Danny Soucy in recognition of the National Day of Mourning, Sunday, April 28:

Workplace accidents are preventable, and employers and employees need to continue to work together to help reduce the number of accidents that happen on the job each year.

One way we can support this effort is by taking the time to reflect on the preventable injuries suffered each year by people exposed to unsafe work environments. In doing so, we can raise awareness of the importance of prevention.

Canada joins over 100 countries in recognizing April 28 as the National Day of Mourning. Throughout the nation, events will be held in workplaces and communities to honour those lives lost and to raise awareness of the importance of health and safety in the workplace.

As minister responsible for WorkSafeNB, I believe it is important to foster a safe work environment for all our province's workers, and I am proud that New Brunswick boasts one of the lowest injury rates in Canada.

Even so, last year, tragically seven New Brunswickers lost their lives and almost 10,000 workers were hurt on the job. I want to express my sympathy and concern to the families and co-workers of these individuals for the sacrifices and pain these accidents have caused.

These injuries remind us that we all must all work together to ensure that health and safety remains our top priority to help prevent workplace tragedies. I encourage all individuals to strive to improve workplace safety in our province.
