FREDERICTON (GNB) – Jennifer Murray has been appointed acting ombudsman. The appointment is effective immediately. Premier David Alward made the announcement today.

"Jennifer's past experience, education, skills and government experience will help her to carry out the duties of her office effectively," Alward said. "I am confident that she will be a key component in continuing the fine work of the Office of the Ombudsman, which helps provide a valuable service to the people of our province."

Murray holds a bachelor of business administration from the University of New Brunswick and a bachelor of laws from Queen's University. She has been a practising member of the Law Society of New Brunswick since 1998.

Murray's most recent position was the director of legal and corporate services in the Office of the Ombudsman. She has been with the office since 2004, with the exception of a 14-month period when she was a senior policy adviser in the Department of Health. She has also held other positions in the private sector.

This acting appointment will remain effective until a new selection process is in place to enable the legislative assembly to appoint a permanent ombudsman.

The Government of New Brunswick established the ombudsman as an independent officer of the legislative assembly in 1967. The office has a mandate under the Ombudsman Act to conduct independent investigations of complaints.
