FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Natural Resources is asking residents who are cleaning up and burning debris left behind by the tropical storm to follow the provincial open burning guidelines.

Although open burning is managed and controlled by the department during the forest fire season, the Department of Environment and Local Government enforces the Air Quality Regulation of the Air Quality Act. Any open burning must be at least 150 metres from neighbouring homes.

Residents are being asked to educate themselves on the two different categories of burning permits and to make sure they follow the established rules.

For a description of the different categories, call the department’s toll-free burn line at 1-866-458-8080. Descriptions can also be found online.
