NEW YORK (GNB) – Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard is promoting New Brunswick as a key player in the energy sector by participating in the North American Energy Summit.

Leonard is among more than 75 leaders taking part in the dialogue on North America's energy potential to address some fundamental questions, including how to maximize the economic benefits of North American energy. The two-day summit began Tuesday, June 10, in New York. United States Vice-President Joe Biden will deliver the keynote address.

"Our government is proud to be participating in the summit along with other leading energy decision makers," said Leonard. "New Brunswick is quickly becoming a recognized name in the global energy market along with other jurisdictions like Alberta, Pennsylvania and Texas, which is proof that our vision for New Brunswick's energy sector is solidifying - a vision that recognizes our multifaceted potential to be the gateway for natural resources on the world market."

The summit, organized by investment banking firm Goldman Sachs, is bringing together public and private sector decision-makers - including chief executive officers, public sector officials, and experts from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as key global investors and companies involved in the North American energy sector - to discuss how the region can achieve its potential.

Panels and discussions being held aim to devise a strategy for harnessing the continent's energy resources to spur economic growth, enhance national security and regional competitiveness as well as promote responsible development of these resources.

As part of the trip, Leonard joined representatives from the Alberta provincial government to visit Pennsylvania and Delaware, states that have become key players in the production, processing and movement of energy resources to the rest of the world. There, the delegation met with senior industry and government officials as well as toured major energy infrastructure projects.

With its strategic location, skilled workforce, upcoming projects such as the Energy East pipeline and existing infrastructure including Canada's only liquefied natural gas terminal, New Brunswick is an attractive investment destination with potential for growth in the energy market.

"Our government recognizes the importance of strengthening connections among energy projects, whether it be on a national, North American or global scale," said Leonard. "Opportunities such as these are key to creating growth in New Brunswick's energy sector through promotion, investments and partnerships."
