FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government today issued a request for expression of interest to explore for and mine potash in New Brunswick.

"New Brunswick has a proven record as a host of significant potash deposits," said Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard. "Two of our deposits have already been developed into world-class operations, and one is being looked into for its potential economic viability. Our government hopes to expand this industry to make New Brunswick an even bigger player in the world potash market."

Through this request, the provincial government is seeking expressions of interest from parties wanting to acquire potash rights to explore and potentially developing this resource.

This is a preliminary step to gauge industry interest in potash expansion. If there is demonstrated interest, and once the appropriate consultations have taken place with communities and First Nations, the provincial government may issue a request for proposals for potash rights.

"The Department of Energy and Mines is proud to be forging ahead on key mining and energy projects to rebuild our economy and bring our workers home to New Brunswick," said Leonard. "We are confident that the expansion of our potash industry can play a big role in bringing investments, revenue and jobs to our province."

The request for expression of interest is on the New Brunswick Opportunities Network website. Expressions of interest may be submitted until March 3, 2014.

Potential potash deposits have already been identified, but they have yet to be explored substantially. In recent years, global interest in potash exploration of green fields has created an increased interest in New Brunswick as a new place in which to explore and invest.
