FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Energy and Mines Minister Craig Leonard:

Today I have received and accepted Louis LaPierre's resignation as chair of the New Brunswick Energy Institute. I wish to thank LaPierre for the work he has done in assisting the provincial government in establishing the institute.

In a very short time, the institute has brought world renowned experts together to research and study the most pressing energy issues facing our province and represents a scientific model that has already received recognition from the National Academy of Sciences in the United States for its innovative approach.

With LaPierre's resignation, the Department of Energy and Mines in conjunction with the members of the Energy Institute's Scientific Advisory Council will immediately begin the process of appointing a new chair for the organization.
