FREDERICTON (GNB) – Several new locations to register moose harvested in next week's hunt have been added by the Department of Natural Resources.

"Since 2010, there has been an increase of more than 1,000 moose licences being issued annually to New Brunswick hunters,'' said Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup. “While this is good news for hunters, it created a situation where additional locations are required to ensure successful hunters can register moose in a timely manner.''

The new private moose registration stations are located in Neguac, Saint-Paul, Tay Creek, McAdam, Saint- Léonard and Edmundston. They join private registration stations in Hopewell Cape, Petitcodiac and Glasier Lake. Moose can also be registered at 17 department offices throughout the province.

"For safety reasons, it is important that a hunter be able to register a moose quickly and get the animal to a butcher shop for processing,'' said Northrup. "By adding these new private registration stations, we will reduce the wait time to register moose at existing locations and reduce the driving distance for hunters.''

The locations of all moose registration stations are online.

Northrup also announced a change in the moose hunting regulation to make it possible for a previously designated hunter to be issued a moose licence in the event of the death of the primary licence holder prior to the moose season. The change will come into effect in time for this fall's hunt.

"While these situations are rare, sadly they do occur and this change has been made at the request of a family that has been through this experience,'' he said.

The 2013 moose hunting season runs from Thursday, Sept. 26, to Saturday, Sept. 28. There were 4,612 licences available this year for New Brunswick residents.
