RICHIBUCTO (CNB) – The Richibucto district office of the Department of Natural Resources has earned a gold rating for green building performance from the Canada Green Building Council.

"This achievement signifies national recognition for the work New Brunswick is doing in energy performance and efficiency in new public buildings," said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claude Williams.

It is the second gold rating the province has received for a building that meets the principles of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a nationally recognized standard used to measure green building performance. The other gold rating was also for a Department of Natural Resources building. In addition, the department has received a silver rating for another of its offices.

"It is fitting, given the nature of the work done by the dedicated staff, that the Department of Natural Resources is leading the way in the construction of green buildings that will leave a smaller environmental footprint,'' said Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup.

The Bathurst regional office earned a silver rating when it opened in 2005 while the new Florenceville office received the gold rating in 2007.

The Richibucto office officially opened last year and recently received a certificate and plaque from the Canada Green Building Council.

Designed and built according to LEED principles, the building uses less energy and water, generates fewer greenhouse gases, uses materials more wisely and produces less waste than traditional structures. It also offers occupants better ventilation, thermal comfort and abundant natural light.
