FREDERICTON (CNB) – Promotion of investment opportunities in the province's mineral and petroleum sectors will be at the top of the agenda at the annual Exploration, Mining and Petroleum New Brunswick conference to be held Nov. 7- 9 at the Delta Fredericton Hotel in Fredericton.

"Our government supports the responsible growth of the mineral and petroleum sectors,'' said Natural Resources Minister Bruce Northrup. "These industries are part of our comprehensive plan focused on job creation and economic growth.''

The value of mineral production in New Brunswick reached almost $1.1 billion in 2009, with the mineral sector directly employing 3,400 people.

New Brunswick has 30 producing gas wells and four wells producing oil. Companies conducting oil and gas exploration have committed to spend more than $200 million in New Brunswick during the next three years.

The conference is hosted by the Department of Natural Resources together with the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum; the New Brunswick Prospectors and Developers Association; and the Department of Geology at the University of New Brunswick.

About 300 delegates from across Canada are registered for the event, including representatives from the mineral industry, the oil and gas sector, universities and the three levels of government.

The conference is a forum for the presentation of research, and the review of mineral and petroleum exploration and mining projects carried out in New Brunswick in 2009. Northrup will address delegates at the opening session on Monday, Nov. 8.

The conference will include industry presentations, displays and exhibits. It will provide an opportunity for companies offering goods and services to the mining and petroleum sectors to display their products and take advantage of networking opportunities.

The media are invited to attend. More information is online.
