FREDERICTON (GNB) – Environment and Local Government Minister Jeff Carr issued the following statement regarding the municipal byelections and plebiscite held Monday:

I thank all candidates who put their name forth for consideration, and I welcome the elected candidates to their new and important positions. It takes strong community leaders to engage residents, and we look forward to working together.

In this regard, I congratulate the elected mayors for Campobello and Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël. Voters in Beaubassin East, Bertrand, Blacks Harbour, Campobello, Florenceville-Bristol, Hanwell, Le Goulet, Paquetville, Rivière-Verte, Saint John, Sainte-Marie-Saint-Raphaël and Salisbury also filled council vacancies in their respective communities. I look forward to advancing priorities with these newly elected officials.

Results of a plebiscite showed that voters in the village of Rogersville, the local service districts of Collette, the parish of Acadieville, the parish of Rogersville, and parts of the local service districts of the parish of Harcourt, the parish of Saint-Louis, and the parish of Weldford did not support the idea of forming a rural community as it was presented. Community restructuring is voluntary, and we respect the results of this democratic process.

I also thank Elections New Brunswick for ensuring voters were well-informed and well-served throughout the election process. Most importantly, I thank the New Brunswickers who took the time to exercise their right to vote. Voting is our chance to make a difference and ensures that community leaders are working to honour the wishes and priorities of their residents.
