FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will issue a new Class 1 air quality approval for J.D. Irving Ltd. for its softwood sawmill and planer mill operation in Chipman.
The company’s current approval expires on March 31 with the new approval taking effect on April 1. The approval follows a public consultation that ran between Sept. 27, 2018, and Jan. 29, 2019.
The Chipman operation produces about 305 million board feet of dimensional lumber per year. The Chipman sawmill produces 225 million board feet and the remaining 80 million comes from the Sussex sawmill, which is kiln-dried and dressed at the Chipman sawmill.
In early 1964, J.D. Irving bought the timberlands and the original sawmill at Grand Lake from Mr. F.E. Sayer. By the fall of that same year, a new sawmill was constructed and operated with logs from the Salmon River drive.
The information, along with the new approval, can be viewed on the Department of Environment and Local Government website or at any regional office of the department.
Class 1 industrial facilities are required to comply with the Air Quality Regulation under the Clean Air Act, and to operate under the terms and conditions established in the approval to operate.
