FREDERICTON (GNB) – Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle issued the following statement today in relation to municipal byelections held Nov. 14:

As the minister of Environment and Local Government, and on behalf of the provincial government, I congratulate the successful candidates in yesterday’s municipal byelections.

I also extend congratulations to residents of the region of Haut-Madawaska on undertaking a plebiscite vote to reorganize their community. I commend the tremendous work accomplished by the feasibility study committee for Haut-Madawaska in the past months. The formation of the new rural community will help ensure long-term economic and social prosperity for the region.

New Brunswickers are best served by strong community leaders who are engaged in building a brighter future, and I thank all candidates for their commitment and dedication to the electoral process.

Elected officials in all capacities, and at all levels, must work collaboratively to help move New Brunswick forward. I look forward to working with and supporting these newly elected officials as they work to strengthen their respective communities. We need strong communities as we look to build a New Brunswick where job creation, fiscal responsibility and helping families are our main priorities.

I would also like to thank Elections New Brunswick for ensuring voters were well-informed and well-served. From informing first-time voters of the requirements and providing people with disabilities the necessary accommodations, to making it easier for seniors in nursing homes to vote, our province can be proud of the democratic principles that drive municipal elections.

Most importantly, I would like to thank the New Brunswickers who took the time to exercise their right to vote. Voting is our chance to make a difference and ensures that community leaders are working to honour the wishes and priorities of their residents.

I look forward to continuing to work with municipal governments and their associations as, together, we get things done.

Elections took place in four communities: Drummond residents elected two councillors; Meductic residents elected one councillor; Miramichi residents elected their mayor and one councillor; and Moncton residents elected a councillor in Ward 4.
