EDMUNDSTON (GNB) – The provincial government will help fund paving, curb and gutter replacement work in Edmundston this year under the Municipal Designated Highway program.

“These investments are crucial for the economic development and the growth of the region,” said Economic Development Minister Francine Landry. “Your government has and will continue to invest strategically in roads and highways to spur economic development, create jobs and improve road safety.”

Landry spoke on behalf of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser.

Under the program, the government and the City of Edmundston will fund paving and curb and gutter replacement on a 500-metre section of Queen Street from Boucher Bridge to the city limit; the paving of 1.3 kilometres of Principale Street in the Saint-Jacques district between Rivière-à-la-Truite Street and 492 Principale Street; intersection upgrades on Victoria Street at the Trans-Canada Highway ramp; and the paving of a 200-metre section of Principale Street in the Saint-Basile district between Damasse Street and 515 Principale Street.

The Municipal Designated Highway program allows municipalities to apply for funding assistance for capital upgrade projects. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $688.2-million capital budget reflects the government’s priority of investing strategically in its buildings, highways and bridges. Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the multi-year New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
