FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has invested in paving projects in the upper St. John River valley.

“Your government recognizes the need for safe, reliable infrastructure in all regions of New Brunswick,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “We are committed to investing strategically in infrastructure so New Brunswick residents and goods can get where they need to go in a safe and efficient manner.”

The department contributed $521,000 to paving in the Village of Aroostook in 2017 under the Municipal Designated Highway Program. The contract included the paving of 1.5 kilometres of Route 130 (Main Street) from the south village limit to the Allen Drive area.

The program received funding requests valued at more than $210 million this year. Funding for the program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, increasing to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain funding for municipalities.

The government also invested in upgrades to Route 105 at Upper Kent in Carleton County. The $2.2-million project involved paving six kilometres of road from Upper Kent to the county line.

“I am proud to be part of a government that is investing in our transportation infrastructure to keep the economy moving while protecting and maintaining our assets,” said Fraser. “Together with our partners, we are getting things done for New Brunswickers.”

Strategic investments in infrastructure are a key component of the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework for growing the economy and creating jobs.
