ST. STEPHEN (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure will fund four significant paving projects along two regional roads in York and Charlotte counties.

Preliminary work has begun on two segments of Route 630, which will comprise nearly nine kilometres of new paving. The project includes six kilometres of paving from Route 3 to the Barber Dam Road and another 2.7 kilometre stretch on Route 630 further towards the York/Charlotte Country line.

“Maintaining rural New Brunswick’s infrastructure is a commitment for this government, and one I feel passionate about,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “We know the residents of Charlotte and York counties depend upon having suitable roads to get their goods to market and to access services in communities like St. Stephen. The size of today’s announcement speaks in support of our commitment to rural New Brunswick and our desire to make this province a great place to work, live and raise a family.”

The second project will encompass two sections of Route 3, with the first beginning at the Route 1 traffic circle and interchange, stretching 3.4 kilometres north to the Maxwell Crossing Road. Also, a 5.8 kilometre section of Route 3 will be paved from the Vail Road area to Lower Trout Brook.

“When you invest in rural communities, you invest in people,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “Charlotte and York counties are known as some of New Brunswick’s most scenic areas and we want to make the best impression possible on visitors to our region. New Brunswick taxpayers deserve a government that works as hard for them as they do for their families.”

These infrastructure projects follow other recent department announcements in the region, including funding from the provincial government’s Municipal Designated Highway Program for both St. Stephen and Saint Andrews.

“This kind of investment is so important in helping us showcase all that our town and region has to offer,” said St. Stephen Mayor Allan MacEachern. “This work along Route 1 will really help our town make a great first impression.”
