SAINTE-ANNE-DE-KENT (GNB) – The provincial government is investing more than $1.6 million to modernize the lagoon treating wastewater from the Stella-Maris-de-Kent Hospital.

“Our government realizes that access to health care is a top priority for New Brunswickers,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau at Sunday’s ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary of the hospital. “By investing in the modernization of our hospitals, our health-care system can function to its full potential and better help people who rely on it.”

A new ventilation system was installed over the summer, allowing the lagoon to treat the hospital’s current wastewater as well as any that will be generated by future development. This will allow the lagoon to function in a more efficient and environmentally-friendly way.

“Our hospitals are at the heart of the communities they serve”, said Gilles Lanteigne, president and CEO of the Vitalité Health Network. “This investment in our wastewater treatment system will allow the Stella-Maris-de-Kent Hospital to continue to offer high-quality health care to the people of Kent County while protecting the environment for many years to come.”

The project, which started in 2015, is expected to be completed by mid-October.
