MIRAMICHI (GNB) – A new 240-bed nursing home will be built in Miramichi, Premier Brian Gallant announced today.

“This infrastructure project will achieve our goals of creating jobs, growing our economy and supporting families,” said Gallant. “The construction of a new nursing home in Miramichi represents a critical investment by our government for the people of this region.”

The new facility will replace both the Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home and the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home, which have a combined total of 214 beds.

“Our government is committed to making life better for our seniors,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser. “This new home will ensure the seniors in the Miramichi region receive the high-quality care they need with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Fraser spoke on behalf of Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers.

The provincial government will use a public-private partnership (P3) procurement process to construct the new facility.

“Under the P3 model, a private sector proponent is responsible to design, build, finance, own and operate the nursing home in accordance with the province’s nursing home standards,” said Tranportation and Infrastructure Minister Roger Melanson.

At Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home, life safety issues are being addressed to ensure the safety and comfort of residents while the new home is being built. This includes exterior repairs, door and window replacements, upgrades for fire protection, plumbing and ventilation.
