FREDERICTON (GNB) – Twenty students from across the province are attending the Provincial Heritage Showcase, which started today and runs until Sunday, June 26 at Metepenagiag Heritage Park in Red Bank.

During Heritage Week in February and French Pride Week in March, 12 regional heritage fairs were held across the province. Students presented hands-on, multimedia presentations on Canadian people, legends, milestones and achievements.

The program is an initiative of the heritage branch of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

“This program is a great example of how we can encourage students to connect with our country’s rich heritage,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “Through these events, we have a chance to reconnect with our past, remember our history and understand how our beautiful province was built and grew to be the New Brunswick we enjoy today.”

A total of 148 schools participated in the fairs, which are organized at the provincial and district level by elementary, middle and high schools.

“The schools and students that participate in these fairs are introducing our heritage into the classroom,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Brian Kenny. “It is important for the next generation to understand the people and events that shaped our country’s history.”

The provincial showcase takes place every year, welcoming students from each school district to a host community, where they are recognized as contributors to the preservation of New Brunswick’s past.
