HALIFAX, N.S. (CNB) - Lt.-Gov. Graydon Nicholas welcomed the Queen aboard Canadian Navy frigate HMCS Fredericton today.
Nicholas was on board HMCS Fredericton as part of the international fleet review conducted by the Queen in Halifax harbour and Bedford Basin.
"I am thrilled with the solid relationship I enjoy with the Fredericton and her crew," said Nicholas. "To be able to welcome Her Majesty to Canada as part of the 100th anniversary of the Navy is something I will never forget."
The new captain of HMCS Fredericton is Cmdr. John Zorz, who took command two weeks ago. The fleet review is his first major assignment.
Nicholas and his wife, Beth, enjoyed a private audience with the Queen last week at Buckingham Palace in London.
"During that visit, I mentioned the friendship that I enjoy with HMCS Fredericton," said Nicholas. "Her Majesty then mentioned how much she was looking forward to the fleet review in Halifax and to her 22nd official visit to Canada. I wanted to visit HMCS Fredericton and tell her crew about my time with Her Majesty. She is a delightful, dedicated woman with a great fondness for Canada."
The Queen inspected HMCS Fredericton and nearly two dozen other ships in Halifax. She sailed past the ships aboard Canadian frigate HMCS St. John's.
