Lieutenant-Governor to hold levee (08/12/31)

FREDERICTON (CNB) - Lt.-Gov. Herménégilde Chiasson invites all residents of the province to welcome 2009 by attending the annual New Year's levee between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at Old Government House in Fredericton.

"This will be my last levee as New Brunswick's lieutenant-governor," said Chiasson, whose term was extended to September 2009. "I hope all of my friends - old and new - will join Marcia and me to celebrate the new year at this historic event."

The levee, a centuries-old custom in New Brunswick, is the traditional way for the vice-regal representative to meet members of the public in a formal setting.

"We have lessened the formality, and I encourage as many people as possible to attend," said Chiasson. "The day includes music, refreshments and even traditional New Brunswick fish chowder to help remove the chill of Jan. 1. I will begin the event with a special proclamation - the first of my term as New Brunswick's 29th lieutenant-governor."
