FREDERICTON (GNB) – Increased funding from the provincial government is allowing the New Brunswick Arts Board, also known as artsnb, to enhance the reach of its remodeled artist-in-residence program.

“This additional investment of $360,000 by our department responds to the recommendations from the Premier’s Task Force on the Status of the Artist,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “The additional funds will allow more artists to benefit from residencies, within and outside the province. It will give them valuable opportunities to hone their craft and increase exposure to their work in new markets. We will continue to focus on these initiatives to promote professional artists’ development in the province.”

The funding increase in the March 2023 budget prompted artsnb to restructure the program, creating more opportunities for artists wishing to attend a residency in the province or elsewhere; it also increases funding to New Brunswick arts organizations wishing to host artist residencies.

“These revisions to the artist-in residence program are a great step in our current efforts to simplify our funding programs so that we can increase accessibility and ease of application,” said artsnb chair Victoria Hutt. “We are excited to be able to offer increased funding in the program, as well as more opportunities for artists and organizations to apply throughout the year, and a refreshed program structure that is easier to understand and apply for.”

The increased will quadruple the funding available for residencies over the 2023-24 fiscal year. To facilitate access to this funding, artsnb has streamlined the application process for an Artist in Residence program with more options:

• One is for individual artists attending residency opportunities in New Brunswick and beyond, including Quebec as per an agreement with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec.

• The second is for organizations in New Brunswick wishing to host artist residencies. This component expands the number of application deadlines from one to six, so that organizations can better align their residency timelines with available funding.

Until recently, artsnb offered artist-in-residence funding for individual artists in three programs: the artist-in-residence component of the career development program for artists attending short-term residences; the artist-in-residence program for artists attending long-term residencies and for New Brunswick-based organizations hosting an artist; and the creative residencies (Quebec) program offered in partnership with the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Quebec. Together, the budgets for these competitions allocated about $100,000 per year for artist residencies.
