FREDERICTON (GNB) – A report released today summarizes public input on the management of the Restigouche river system and indicates support for the conservation and protection of the area.

A consultation process was conducted by the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture in the fall of 2019, prior to the pandemic, regarding the watershed, which includes several tributaries such as the Kedgwick, the Little Main Restigouche, the Upsalquitch and the Patapédia rivers. The report is available online.

“The Restigouche river system attracts thousands of visitors every year to experience a variety of outdoor adventures, including boating and salmon fishing,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace. “Over the years, a growing consensus has emerged that stronger conservation measures are required for the area. This consensus was reflected throughout the consultation process.”

Consultations revealed an overwhelming support for any future plans to include a wilderness experience; to provide recreational opportunities such as canoeing, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, viewing wildlife, and camping; and ensuring the watershed is protected.

The public consultation process included two stakeholder roundtable sessions, four open houses conducted by department officials, and an online survey.

“The consultation process was built around questions related to the tourism experience, conservation and management of the area,” said Scott-Wallace. “It was a positive and constructive process with a good representation of stakeholders at the roundtable sessions, open houses and responses to the survey.”

The department has initiated preliminary discussions with First Nations in the province, as well as with Listuguj First Nation in Quebec. Scott-Wallace said the department will continue to work closely with First Nations and is committed to a formal consultation process in the future.

The provincial government will take the feedback received into consideration and determine the next steps to ensure the preservation of the Restigouche river system.
