RED DEER, Alta. (GNB) – Team New Brunswick will earn its first medal on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.

Boxer Isaiah Haya will challenge Ontario opponent Tiago Balterio for the gold medal in an 81-kilogram bout late Wednesday night. Haya defeated a boxer from British Columbia on Monday night to earn the right to the gold-medal match.

The wheelchair basketball team is advancing to the medal round with a semifinal game against host Alberta on Wednesday. Team New Brunswick earned the right to the semifinals following Tuesday’s 52-41 win over Team Manitoba. Austin MacLellan was Tuesday’s leading scorer with 20 points followed by Brandon Gillis, who netted 19 points. A Wednesday victory would propel Team New Brunswick to Thursday’s gold-medal match.

In ringuette, Britney Snowdon scored five goals in Tuesday’s 9-4 victory over Team Nova Scotia, which sends Team New Brunswick to Wednesday’s playoff round.

The men’s long track speedskaters competed in the 5,000-metre event with John Crawford, Remy Martin, Riley Adams and Scott Verschoor finishing 20th, 25th, 26th and 29th respectively. In the women’s 3,000-metre event, Leila Cartier, Emma LeBlanc, Grayson Miller and Lucy Wolfe finished 22nd, 24th, 25th and 28th respectively. They return to the oval on Wednesday for their respective 1,000-metre finals.

Team New Brunswick’s biathletes return to the trails on Wednesday for relay events following Tuesday’s pursuit. In the women’s 7.5-kilometre pursuit, Lauren Martin, Emma Septon, Emily Czerwinski and Megan Costain completed the race 25th, 34th, 37th and 39th respectively. In the men’s 10-kilometre pursuit, Jeremy Leigh, Felix Côté, Collin Niles and François Leclair finished 22nd, 23rd, 25th and 36th respectively.
