WINNIPEG (GNB) – New Brunswick para swimmer Jesse Canney won a pair of medals Wednesday evening at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Canney claimed a silver medal in the men’s 100-metre para butterfly and a bronze in the men’s 100-metre para backstroke event at the Pan Am Pool. His medal performance in the pool lifts Team New Brunswick’s medal count to 12: three gold, three silver and six bronze medals.

The swim team has garnered four medals in the last two days. Jacob Gallant and Brooklyn Douthwright each won a bronze medal Tuesday. They both came up short in their respective A final events Wednesday night at the Pan Am Pool.

Rain hampered play for several sports Wednesday, prompting the cancellation of canoe-kayak and tennis. Early-morning lightning and rain caused a four-hour delay at golf. Team New Brunswick’s golfers teed off under a steady rain shortly after noon, with Calvin Ross leaving the Southwood Golf and Country Club in a fifth-place tie in the men’s competition. He shot 72 on Wednesday, followed by Stuart Earle (74) and Samuel Reid (75). The men’s team sits in 5th spot in the standings.

In the women’s event, Laura Jones is the top New Brunswicker. Jones shot 77, followed by Laura Wesselius (84) and Sarah Holt (90).

Two members of the cycling team completed the women’s 80-kilometre road race. Sarah Gilbert placed 23rd and Amanda Lee finished 25th. Danielle Dumouchel and Laura Clarke did not finish the race. The men’s team will race in the 120-kilometre road event Thursday.

The women’s volleyball team played hard against Alberta, but lost 3-1 in a tough three set battle. They return to action Thursday morning against Newfoundland and Labrador. The men’s squad lost its morning match 3-0 to Alberta, but defeated Northwest Territories 3-0 in evening play.

Women’s softball lost twice Wednesday, 11-6 to Alberta and 6-2 to Saskatchewan. The team plays Prince Edward Island Thursday.

The men’s soccer team defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 3-0 Wednesday. The team returns to the pitch on Thursday in a quarter-final match against host Manitoba.

In the wrestling team competition, New Brunswick’s women defeated Quebec 35-18. The team was slated to wrestle against British Columbia Wednesday evening before returning to the mats on Thursday to face off against Ontario and British Columbia. The men’s team wrestled their way to a 42-11 victory against Newfoundland and Labrador. They were scheduled to wrestle against Nunavut and Saskatchewan in the evening, then face off against British Columbia and Prince Edward Island Thursday.
