ST. STEPHEN (GNB) – The Town of St. Stephen has been chosen to host the province’s official 2016 New Brunswick Day celebrations to be held on Monday, Aug. 1.

“It is important that New Brunswickers celebrate what makes our province a great place to live, work and raise a family,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “I encourage the people of New Brunswick to join together in St. Stephen to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the place we call home.”

St. Stephen is known as Canada’s Chocolate Town and is home to Ganong Bros. Ltd., Canada’s oldest candy company. Each year since 1985, in August, the town holds an annual Chocolate Festival to celebrate their rich and delicious history. The success of the festival led to the creation of the Chocolate Museum in 1999 and its expansion in 2009.

“New Brunswick Day is a day to celebrate our rich cultural heritage, our province’s natural beauty and the people who call our great province home,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser. “I am confident that this year’s celebrations in St. Stephen will be a wonderful occasion.”

New Brunswick Day has been celebrated since 1976. An official host community has been chosen since 1990.

“I am thrilled that St. Stephen has been chosen as host for the province’s official 2016 New Brunswick Day celebrations,” said Charlotte-Campobello MLA John Ames.
