FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following message was issued today by Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser in recognition of Asian Heritage Month:

I am proud to support New Brunswickers in the celebration of the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their continued social, cultural, political and economic contributions to our province and our country.

Beginning with the Lebanese who arrived in New Brunswick in 1879, Asian Canadians have made a lasting impact on the province as a population responsible for many important innovations in areas including business, technology and the arts.

Throughout the month of May, New Brunswickers are encouraged to participate in the many multicultural activities offered that acknowledge and explore Asian Canadian heritage. A series of food workshops held by the Asian Heritage Society of New Brunswick in Fredericton is just one example of the many activities that will be offered this year.

Our province proudly supports the multicultural and ethno-cultural agencies that serve immigrants and commit to making our province a more welcoming place. We recognize the ongoing successes and dedication of these agencies represented by growing memberships.

Asian Heritage Month provides New Brunswickers with an important opportunity to celebrate multiculturalism and the belief that Canadians – regardless of race, culture or creed – have the ability to live together in harmony and to learn from one another.

I extend my best wishes to the members of Asian Canadian communities and encourage all New Brunswickers to participate in festivities that celebrate the many achievements and contributions of these communities to our province.
